TESOL Training Program

Our online TESOL Training Program covers approximately 100 hours of theory-based coursework, including several assignments and a research project. The program is largely self-directed and there is no timeline for each individual assignment – but you must complete the entire course including the practicum within 6 months.

CCET TESOL TRAINING PROGRAM

Students are partnered with a program supervisor who will guide them through the course, which can be started at any time. There are no online classes to attend, but your program supervisor will schedule a video call with you before you begin to answer any questions you may have and to get you started.  The course includes units involving working with tasked-based language, working with adult students of different proficiency levels, and creating complete and effective lesson plans. It is geared toward adult English language instruction.

Additional Information

PRACTICUM

The practicum component of the course consists of 10 hours of observation and 10 hours of supervised teaching in an adult ESL class.

Trainees are welcome to contact schools or adult education centres offering online courses, and shadow a few lessons with them to meet this requirement. All practicums must be completed with a school (anywhere) in Canada with an adult ESL class with a minimum of 5 students.

The instructor of the class you are working with must be TESL Canada certified.  Language schools, community courses, and LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada) programs all offer acceptable classes for the practicum component. Some private schools do charge a small practicum fee, but most community-based language classes do not.

Please note that it is the sole responsibility of the student to find an adult ESL class with which to carry out the practicum.

TESOL CERTIFICATE

Once you complete the course, you will receive your training certificate.

Some employers only ask for the TESOL training certificate, others require a TESL Standard One certificate. If you would like to apply for the TESL Standard One certificate, you may do so online.

You will need to include a copy of a training certificate from a TESL Canada-recognized program, fill out an additional registration form and attach some personal documents (including your degree and language assessment results), and pay a small membership fee.

There is also a job board on their site, if you’d like to take a look at available positions posted there.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Completion of senior matriculation in Canada or completion of an undergraduate degree from an English-speaking University. All other interested applicants must  submit a copy of English proficiency scores for further review.

Applicants who are accepted by Canada College of Education without a University degree may not qualify for TESL Canada Standard Level 1 Instructor Certification – please see the TESL Canada website for more details check the test site.
